Fritz's Polka Band returns to the New York State Fair

Fritz's Polka Band will perform again at the New York State Fair in on Monday, August 30, 2010. FPB will be doing two different shows, scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the new Collonade Stage.

"We've been performing at the New York State Fair for over 10 years, and are really excited about being there again," band leader Fritz Scherz said in a recent press release. “However, 2010 will mark the first time we’ve performed there since my Dad (Fred Scherz, Sr.) passed away. We plan on paying tribute to him by performing some of the songs he wrote, as the Fair was always one of his favorite gigs each year. This is such a great family event, as we typically see people in the audience ranging from little infants to people well over 80 years old. We're proud to be bringing generations together!”

Fritz's Polka Band was recently nominated for Best New Recording by the Ceveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid, OH. They also advanced to the second round of voting for the Syracuse Area Music Awards fan favorite band. Click here to vote for FPB to advance to the next round.

Bret Michaels suing over cancelled concert

The controversy surrounding the August 5 cancellation of the Bret Michaels concert at the Syracuse Regional Market took another interesting twist Wednesday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michaels is suing concert promoter Michael Banks for $5 million for "breaching his contract and exposing him to public contempt and ridicule with allegedly defamatory statements about his schedule."

According to the report, Michaels claims he wasn't paid two promised deposits and didn't know the show was canceled until he arrived in Syracuse the morning of the show.

Banks announced the show was canceled the day before, citing a conflict in Michaels' schedule, in reference to a pre-taped appearance on So You Think You Can Dance. Michaels was actually in Elmira performing at Tags the night before the scheduled Syracuse appearance.

Michaels promised fans he would return to Syracuse November 26 for a show using a different promoter. Tickets for the August show will not be honored for the rescheduled event.

Banks has promised to refund money paid by those who bought tickets in advance even if he "has to borrow the money." On his Web site, Banks states: "My advisors and I are working towards a plan of solution for this situation. Please check back for details upon its finalization."

I say good for you, Bret Michaels!

    State Fair entertainment calender

The New York State Fair is right around the corner and there's lots of great entertainment planned for this year's edition. The Mohegan Sun Grandstand and Chevy Court offer well-known national acts, including Aerosmith, Rush, Lady Antebellum, and much more, but there is a lot more music going on at the State Fair than what most people realize and it's all free for the price of fair admission.

I've put together a calendar of live entertainment events for this year's fair and posted it as a page over on the blog's right rail. Hopefully, you can use it to plan your day at the fair and catch some cool acts that you might not otherwise know about. Enjoy, and have a great time at the great NYS Fair!

Brewerton woman wins chance to record with Susan Boyle

I Dreamed A DreamAmber Stassi, 32, of Brewerton got the surprise of her life Thursday when Susan Boyle called to tell her that she'd won a contest to sing a duet on Boyle's upcoming album. Stassi had heard about the contest on the Today show and recorded a video of "Silent Night" in front of an ambulance at TLC Brewerton where she works. Stassi then submitted the video to the contest's YouTube site.

Boyle, who was runner-up on last season's Britain's Got Talent after her audition video went viral, wanted to give someone else the same opportunity she was give.

On her Web site Boyle said, “I never thought so many people would want to take part in this, and I want to thank everyone. It was very hard to choose a winner as there are so many talented singers around the world. Amber really stood out for me though. I enjoyed her audition clip very much; she has a lovely, very beautiful voice.”

Stassi's response is also posted on Boyle's site:

I can’t believe I just spoke to Susan Boyle, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would win this competition. To receive this gift from Susan is truly a blessing and if I can pass this gift on to someone else who needs it like I did, that would be perfect. We have had some hard times, if my father was here now he would be so proud, I know he’s here in spirit, but this is a chance to give my kids a good memory and maybe a chance at a better life. I can’t believe I spoke with Susan - and that Susan and even Simon Cowell has seen my audition! This is crazy!

In late August, Stassi will fly to London to record "The Gift" with Boyle. A camera crew from Sony Pictures and Simon Cowell’s Syco TV company have already been to Brewerton to film Stassi and her family.

    Here's the video.

Bands step up to help Bret Michaels' show ticket holders

Bret Michaels was not the only performer shut out after last week's fiasco at the Regional Market. Three local bands who were to open for Michaels were also left out in the cold. But, rather than to continue to dwell in the negativity of all of this,  these musicians have come up with a creative semi-solution.

Silent Fury's front man, Mick Fury, along with members of The Feroni Project and Dirty Little Secret will be performing Sunday at ShamRocks Rock and Roll Irish Pub (109 E. Taft Rd., North Syracuse) in a show dubbed The Antidote show.

Admission is free for anyone with a ticket to the Bret Michaels show and $10 for everyone else. Proceed from the show will go to the American Diabetes Association, Bret Michaels' favorite charity.

In a statement on his Web site, Mick Fury explains:

I (Mick) feel horrible about what happened with the Bret Michaels show, and I wanna do my best to make it up to you all... So whether you bought tickets from the promoter, myself, or any of the bands, please come down and enjoy some music.

In addition, all Silent Fury merchandise will be on sale for half price.

As for refunds for the Aug. 5 show, promoter Michael Banks is promising that he'll do whatever it takes to get people their money back, even if he has to borrow it.

Fans of Asia, who was to perform this past Thursday at the market will have an opportunity to see them Saturday in Rochester at the Main Street Armory. Admission is free with a donation of a can of food for the Rochester food bank. Ths show starts at 7 p.m.
