Baldwinsville Theatre Guild presents 'Witness for the Prosecution'

Next month, the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild will be presenting a production of Agatha Christie's 'Witness for the Prosecution.'  The show, which is directed by John LaCasse and produced by  Pat Bridenbaker, runs Oct. 22, 23, 29, 30, Nov. 5, & 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Presbyterian Education Center (64 Oswego St., Baldwinsville).

Sunday, Sept. 19: Westcott Street Cultural Fair and much more today

One of my favorite events of the season, the Westcott Street Cultural Fair, takes place today from noon to 6:30 p.m. The event, which celebrates  the diversity and uniqueness of the Westcott neighborhood, offers great food, crafts, and music from a variety of bands performing on seven different stages. Main stage entertainment features Sophistafunk (1 p.m.), Joe Driscoll (2:30 p.m.), Evan Knight (4 p.m.), and the BlackLites (5:30 p.m.). Admission is free. The annual Festa Italiana kicks off today in front of City Hall in downtown Syracuse. Thursday, Sept. 16: Utica Music and Arts Fest kicks off today

The Utica Music and Arts Fest gets underway tonight with a kickoff party at the F.X. Matt Brewery Tour Center Courtyard. Jimkata and The Buddhahood will both be performing. Music starts at 5:30 p.m. and admission free with UMAF bracelet, or $5 without.

In addition to the event at F.X. Matt, there is a kickoff party at Nail Creek Pub and Brewery, also in Utica, featuring The Rusty Doves, Strung Sideways, Aaron ShamleyKiernen McMullen, J. Schmitt starting at 8 p.m.

The festival takes place in various venues around the city of Utica and runs through Saturday. One-day passes are $25 and include free admission to all participating venues and free transportation for the day/night or purchase. Saturday day pass will include free admission to participating venues and your admission to sample Utica Greens at the Utica Greens Fest from 12 to 6 p.m. on Varick St. Single event admission is also available at the various venues. Fritz's Polka Band to be inducted into SAMMY's Hall of Fame

Fritz's Polka Band will be inducted into the Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYs) Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place October 7th at 7 p.m. at Upstairs at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (246 West Willow St.)in Syracuse. Tickets to the induction dinner are $20.

“When I received the note from Liz Nowak (President of the Syracuse Area Music Awards Executive Board) indicating we were to be inducted, I was excited as well as surprised,” said Fritz Scherz, bandleader of FPB in a press release.

"To be inducted into the SAMMY's Hall of Fame is such an incredible honor! The guys in Fritz’s Polka Band are looking forward to taking part in the induction ceremony on the 7th of October. Although I’ll have full comments that evening, I do want to thank the SAMMY's Executive Board, our great fans, DJs, music critics, the media, and of course, our great sponsor, Jagermeister. Also, we want to thank all former members of Fritz’s Polka Band, especially my Dad (Fred Scherz Sr.) who passed away last year in November and was responsible for getting FPB started."

Scherz went on to thank the musicians who have sat in with the band over the years, including.

The 2010 Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Music Awards Show will be held during MIC:Meet Interact Connect October 8 at the Oncenter (800 S. State St.). Tickets are $10 and available on the official SAMMY's Web site.

Singer-songwriter Jason Mraz performs at 7:30 p.m. at the Stanley Theatre (259 Genesee St., Utica). Robert Francis opens for Mraz. Tickets are $51.50.

Mraz released his first album, Waiting for My Rocket to Come, in 2002 to little notice. His second album, Mr. A-Z peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 200.  In 2008, Mraz released his third album, We Sing. We Dance, which featured his first top ten single, "I'm Yours." The song held on the Hot 100 for 76 weeks, which beat LeAnn Rimes "How Do I Live," which charted for 69 week.

Ftitz's Polka Band nominated for award

Fritz's Polka Band has been nominated for an Upper State Independent Award in the International category. The award show will take place November 6 at a venue that will be announced shortly. The Upper State Independent Awards acknowledge independent musicians from all genres and backgrounds.

“We were excited to win an Upper State Independent Award the last two years in the International Category, and are thrilled to get nominated again this year," said Fritz Scherz in a press release. "Last year’s win was extra special, as it occurred one week before my Dad (Fred Scherz Sr.) passed away. I remember seeing how happy he was when Mike (FPB drummer) and I got back to his house after the award show and told him. We're very appreciative of being nominated, and want to thank our great fans, djs, music critics, the media for supporting us over the years, and of course, our great sponsor, Jagermeister. Thank you very much!"

Tuesday, Sept. 7: Live music in and around the 'Cuse

The fair is over and summertime concert series have wrapped up. It's been fun keeping up with all the great entertainment, but live music in and around the 'Cuse never stops and we'll keep on keeping on!

Here's what's going on today.

  • Snatum Kaur is at the Auburn Public Theater (8 Exchange St., Auburn) tonight and Wednesday. Kaur performs the Sikh devotional music and tours around the world as a peace activist. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $35 at the door.
  • Cato and Lavancher are at Pfohl’s Beachouse (301 Park Ave., Sylvan Beach) - 6:30 p.m.
  • Michael Crissan at PJ’s Pub & Grill (Walton Street, Armory Square) - 8 p.m.
  • Fab Five Paul at Uno’s Chicago Grill (Route 31, Clay) - 7:30 p.m.
  • Dave Hawthorn at Hotch’s (8081 Brewerton Road, Cicero) - 6 p.m.
  • John McConnell at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (246 W. Willow St.)
  • Open Mike with Joe Henson at Village Tavern (6 E. Main St., Marcellus) - 7:30 p.m.
  • Open Mike with Sweet Lou at Lock 24 (33 Water St., Baldwinsville) - 8:30 p.m.

Monday, Sept. 6: State Fair wraps today

It's Labor Day, and the last official day of summer. It's also the last day of the New York State Fair, which wraps up its musical lineup with an 8 p.m. performance by Marc Broussard at Chevy Court. Jackyl performs at the court at 2 p.m. Admission to the fair is $10 and the shows are included.

'American Idol 5' runner-up, Katharine McPhee headlines today at Chevy Court at the New York State Fair. The show starts at 2 p.m. and admission is free with paid fair admission. Keith Sweat performs the evening show at Chevy Court starting at 8 p.m.
