Syracuse Symphony Orchestra board suspends operations

Tuesday, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra’s board of trustees voted to suspend operations due to lack of funds. This will end the season, including the much anticipated performance by cellist Yo-Yo Ma scheduled for April 27.

The SSO will lay off all but eight employees. Ticket holders will not be given refunds.

SSO Executive Director Paul Brooks said the move to suspend operations was due to several factors. The SSO fell short of its March fundraising goal of $445,000 and did not receive the requested $1.3 million in concessions from the musicians. The SSO is $5.5 million in debt for the 2010-11 season.

Prayers for Japan

A woman wrapped up in a blanket stands in the middle of rubble, looking at the city submerged under water in Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture.  (AP Photo/The Yomiuri Shimbun, Tadashi Okkubo)
When I sat down to update this blog for the rest of the week, I found it difficult to focus on local entertainment with all that's happening in Japan. A disaster of this magnitude really puts things in perspective. Consider that this time last week, the biggest news story was the public meltdown of a drug addicted actor. How quickly life can change. Now, with a possible nuclear disaster looming, we can only wait, watch, and pray.

We are one planet and human suffering knows no boundaries. The picture above tells the story - hopelessness and fear. Please help by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
